Liverpool suffers a major blow to their Champions League title ambitions

Just ahead of the tough first leg of the Champions League round of 16 against Galatasaray, Liverpool was hit with unfortunate news as their primary goalkeeper Alisson Becker suddenly sustained an injury and had to pull out.

Liverpool is preparing for the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 against Galatasaray in Istanbul, but manager Arne Slot's plans have been disrupted as the team loses one of its most crucial pillars. Goalkeeper Alisson Becker had to withdraw from the squad due to a physical issue encountered during training.

According to information from The Times, Alisson felt pain after training on Monday and immediately reported it to the coaching staff. Although the issue is considered not too serious, Liverpool still decided not to risk the Brazilian goalkeeper for their away trip to Turkey.

In the 21-player list announced by Liverpool for the trip to Istanbul, Alisson is the most notable absentee. His inability to participate forces the Merseyside club to alter their plans for the goalkeeper position.

As planned, Giorgi Mamardashvili will start in the match against Galatasaray. The Georgian goalkeeper has experience playing when he replaced Alisson during his teammate's previous injury period. Freddie Woodman will be promoted to the backup position for Mamardashvili.

Alisson's absence is a significant loss for Liverpool, especially since the team experienced a difficult match in Istanbul during the group stage this season. In that away fixture, Liverpool lost to Galatasaray with a 0-1 score, and Alisson also suffered a hamstring injury that sidelined him for seven weeks.

Mamardashvili – who previously replaced Alisson during that period, has made 9 appearances for Liverpool this season. The 25-year-old goalkeeper understands his opportunities are limited but remains patiently waiting.

“That is never easy because there is only one single goal,” Mamardashvili shared.

“If I don’t get to play, it’s fine. I have to work hard every day and that’s it. My chance will definitely come.”

Besides Alisson, Liverpool also will not have Federico Chiesa available for the trip to Istanbul after the player missed training at the AXA training center. The absence of the Italian forward deprives manager Slot of another attacking option.

Nevertheless, Liverpool received positive news as Florian Wirtz has returned to the squad following a back injury and is included in the 21-player list. The German player recently came off the bench in the FA Cup win against Wolves.

Before this crucial match, manager Arne Slot also acknowledged that the away trip to Istanbul will be a major challenge.

“Difficult. That is what you must anticipate in the round of 16, because every team you face is tough to play against because they have a reason to be there.”
