Coach Mai Duc Chung offers advice for Vietnamese women's football

After the defeat against Japan, Coach Mai Duc Chung declared his farewell to the Vietnamese women's national team and shared advice for the growth of the country's women's football.

The Vietnamese women's national team officially halted their journey after a group stage defeat to Japan; Coach Mai Duc Chung formally bid farewell, while offering insights and guidance to help shape the future development of the nation's women's football.

“It must be said that in Southeast Asia and across Asia, women's football has developed very vigorously. In Southeast Asia, Vietnam, Philippines, and many other teams have invested more and shown greater interest in women's football. Additionally, countries in Asia such as Iran, Uzbekistan… are also focusing on developing women's football. AFC leaders are also very concerned about promoting women's football movements in the region, elevating women's football to new heights,” Coach Mai Duc Chung shared.

Responding to questions about the loss to the Japanese team, the head coach of the Vietnamese women's national team candidly acknowledged his responsibility, while affirming that winning and losing are normal occurrences in football.

“In sports, especially football, there are always wins and losses. As the head coach, I must take responsibility for the team's performance. When we lose, I must accept even more blame. Sometimes we face opponents of equal strength, sometimes we face opponents stronger than us. In football, that is normal. Everyone desires victory, but when it is not achieved, we must accept it and continue striving,” he said.

Coach Mai Duc Chung also praised the competitive spirit of his players against a higher-caliber opponent. “The Japanese national team has a very high level of skill, ranking far above us. However, the Vietnamese players exerted their utmost effort. Given what the athletes demonstrated today, I believe that is also highly commendable.”

Furthermore, he believes that for Vietnamese women's football to continue developing, greater attention must be paid to youth training and grassroots movement development. “We must continue working and striving harder, especially in developing youth football. It is necessary to strengthen football in schools, training centers, and local communities. When the grassroots movement becomes stronger, the performance of the national team can then be improved.”
